Untold Darkness

this man-child is weary of being alone
this boy of growing raised on his own
this world holds him timeless and ageold
this life of memory holds a past filtered
untold can he live with thoughts, selflessness, fears
reaping and sowing so many reckless loveless years
he's watched while now ghostly women of tears
playing past images through the silent movie
haunted mental pictures of tried suicides
intentional taking of his own life to flee
a light so bright, dying average drunken nights
his youth has been stolen by angry drunken poets
his gayness robbed by the tombstone mob
his soul can't seek out, to know what life is about
untold darkness, lifeless form, dead unborn

Friday November 9, My Time of Thought

there was a shooting star tonight
I thought about myself
how I was there to see it
I think back to today's conversation
with a friend, about how the things
we tell ourselves sound so well rehearsed
when we say them out loud to another
I thought about April,(crazy4sunday)
I thought about my silver car
from my stoop, I watched my tree
little green leaves shake with the breeze
I sit sipping cool water, think about myself
how I am a man these days, alone, on my own
it was a cool-bright november day today
I thought about how I passed my time away
my therapist is leaving me, inconsiderate
I thought about the mixes I posted
it's 10:48 pm and how I'm not ready for bed
I watched Soundtrack for a Revolution
the music that came out of the civil rights generation
We Shall Over Come
Sit Down At The Welcome Table
We Shall Not Be Moved
how the marchers are now old men and old women
they put their lives on the line for freedom
not just for black people but for us all
I thought about how freedom has no purpose
I thought about freedom, from the need to be free
there was a seed planted in my mind about that music
how it would feel to make a mix of freedom fighter songs
then I thought about love for my fellow man, brotherhood
now I sit in my living room trying to draw a conclusion
about my day, about the state of my mind after all this thinking
I love every friday, it's my own time to think, I'm thankful
thankful for my life, how it only takes one friend to be poetic
how people, poetry comes to the fertile mind at just the right time

The Listener

can you understand a listener?
what a listener does, the purpose
to place in the mind, the purpose
to make space in the heart for art
the caring of taking the time for art
for the artist, I am doing my part
a song maybe fleeting but not to me
I make my home in songs to belong
there is nowhere I would rather be
a good song can set you free ask me
like the clicks and buttons I use to
turn on to, to live through what I do
I preserve the open oneness, I do
I always make it new, I want to hear it
like the first wonderment, so profound
so true, the place it took me to in my mind
how the song took me where I went into
It's comfort, consoled in sound, beautiful-sadness
unbound and new-found, like my written words
consuming my feelings of the art of good
taking the space in my heart I knew it would
then and when I hear it again, checking the mix
for flaws, effect, cause, containing quality
reflecting awe, digging sound, getting my fix
maybe, it's the art in a strong man's heart
to open the door from all the loneliness within
maybe, in the simpleness of writing in this notebook
to break up the flow of emptiness in my consciousness
maybe, the space and room of listening to this mix
to communicate to a friend feelings from within, songs
to shape and mend the splintered empty lonely heart
