The Clever Innocence

Old

and the pain, spirits health rots
decline of excellence, life itself is experience
the oddity of age grows in step with the years
worried thoughts of what was and now is
trickle to the center of being, gone, gone
having existed, lived through, to know all of you
endured, underwent life in the past tense
all of this pastness, moments between
feelings, memories, dreams, gone, gone
measuring a life and this place in the world
oh, the family, friends, loved ones & sunsets
sunsets is now all I think about and people
watching the people now on the park bench
the way I think about young women, swimmin'
big blue world, grace of space I take, livin'
what have I given? back, what am I knowing?
to talk about this gift of life, how I grew to believe
in myself, how learned to make this life work for me,
how there is no difference in the man I am
than the man I want to become, the man I respect
myself, I am, the spirit returns, when I read my poetry
the eyes of age in the thousand yard stare
the eyes of age in the thousand yard stare
like everything it will pass, will anyone know to care?

Fleeting Fixation

my life allows me to smoke
it's funny to think of my life,
my preoccupation of my life, like that
smoking is much more than inhaling
smoking is much more than exhaling
smoking is a romantic beauty with sadness
such is life, sad and beautiful
smoking is what you call an epitome of
fleeting fixation, emotional self-gratification
on thoughts, many thoughts, handfuls of sensations
in the same breath I feel how it hurt
to cough, sneeze, wheeze to freely breath
would you like a cigarette? yes, please
I converse with my soul and spirit
over woman's fascination with fire
control is power, freedom to think
freely flows this desire of fire and smoke
flicks the flame, smoke sparks the brain
oneness, wholeness & self-satisfaction

oh, the look in my grandfather's eyes
when he lay dying of cancer
the disgust in the tone of his voice
approaching me while smoking on that
warm, st. petersburg ocean evening
all the while the song of the folk purist
Carl Sandburg, plays in the background
"cigarettes will spoil yer life"
I know what is true
my life is more complete when my thoughts flow
my life is more exciting than quitting
quitting, is so definite
quitting is so well defined
quitting is free

Life Is People

maybe this world is the grand picture inside you and me
knowledge to know what to look for, is called prophecy
some have this sight to see
some hold on to this humanity
some know enough to claim goodness
as reality
I heard something profound today
association brings on assimilation
so think through those few friends you choose
they will be apart & make up you
you will listen to what they say
you will take on thier politics, those conversations, conflicts
transfix & mix with your own views
in the end those memories, those mental pictures
hold you when you are alone
fill your mind when you are on your own

Sultry (Soul-Tree)

lost beyond despair, hope of innocence
I ask this question of I, mysteriously of me
would it be inhuman to rid the world of sin?
trees chained by roots, birds chained by air
this asking in innocuousness, flesh flickering
a fire so full and bright burns of eternal light
lifeless of this, I ask this question fearless & free
to believe, would make a sound to my soul-tree
to believe, art of listen to cries of bird-skies to free
each line it seems rhymes with my truth
another life waiting in vain, connection with this pain
so mundane, so transcendental and far from me
