U.Utah Phillips- Loafer's Glory- The Hobo Jungle of The Mind

Black History Month

THE ROLLING STONES "Memory Motel" (Jagger/Richards)

Hannah honey was a peachy kind of girl
Her eyes were hazel
And her nose were slightly curved
We spent a lonely night at the Memory Motel
It's on the ocean, I guess you know it well
It took a starry to steal my breath away
Down on the water front
Her hair all drenched in spray
Hannah baby was a honey of a girl
Her eyes were hazel
And her teeth were slightly curved
She took my guitar and she began to play
She sang a song to me
Stuck right in my brain
You're just a memory of a love
That used to be
You're just a memory of a love
That used to mean so much to me
She got a mind of her own
And she use it well
Well she's one of a kind
She's got a mind
She got a mind of her own
And she use it mighty fine
She drove a pick-up truck
Painted green and blue
The tires were wearing thin
She turned a mile or two
When I asked her where she headed for
"Back up to Boston I'm singing in a bar"
I got to fly today on down to Baton Rouge
My nerves are shot already
The road ain't all that smooth
Across in Texas is the rose of San Antone
I keep on a feeling that's gnawing in my bones
You're just a memory of a love
That used to mean so much to me
You're just a memory girl
You're just a sweet memory
And it used to mean so much to me
Sha la la la la
She got a mind of her own
And she use it well
Mighty fine, she's one of a kind
On the seventh day my eyes were all a glaze
We've been ten thousand miles
Been in fifteen states
Every woman seemed to fade out of my mind
I hit the bottle and hit the sack and cried
What's all this laughter on the 22nd floor
It's just some friends of mine
And they're busting down the door
Been a lonely night at the Memory Motel

Alabaster Heart

old love letters make
the young man made old
a finely granular variety of gypsum
rhythmically blood circulates
often white and translucent
objects in motion
oxygenated blood
tend to cling and hang on
I remember loving you
she foolishly thought of me in that way
ghost in my head
the way she made me feel
like a missing piece
I'm not so proud anymore
particles of my eternal dusty memory
plagued by various forms of psychosis
old feelings pour in
hopes won't make me innocent
jesus christ,
pain floods the center of the total personality
my smile,my laugh
don't greet the strangers at your door
don't live among the heartless...

my mixing gusto, my storytelling gusto, imaginative charmer

ask yourself about the pictures you see
when you are listening to my music
musical hopes shadows of the evening
shipwrecked, castaways, for the listener
newness of a song can't last long, fleeting
like kisses of your first girl friend in summer

ask yourself about the places you go with my mixing
manic mixing, obsession to place 20 songs for 80 mins.
I fancy 78 mins. myself without same letter follow another
same first letter of the artist can't be next on the running order
method to madness, my mind holds songs, feelings & expressions
fitting to have a heart of home in these song obsessions

ask yourself about the rain and sun of these mixes
rise, pummeled, set & poured into your open door
your open windows of your heart, mind & time, yes, time
my time spent working at my desk, fleshing out idyllically
the echos of my mind, though sound but stable as static
noise to drown, time allows me, as once did drink for sorrows

ask yourself about the frames of mind, friends on the internet
the importance of people and the holiness of the the soul
the signs on the windows of the soul, out of your control
I've come to believe I am a solemn conservative atheist
that freight train of thought, is better sold than bought
I am a lost soul searching, I am seeking a freedom profound

Work Can Set Me Free

By: George Waldrop

I made up my mind to be happy
my life upon the merry-go-round
work is not only about me
find the beauty in every tree
work can set me free

work can desensitize, take your mind
make you blind so it's hard to see
work is not only about me
find the beauty in every tree
work can set me free

this freedom is not the pride I take away
this freedom is not the money I made today
it's knowing the job I did, done the right way
completing each task at hand with my fellow man
I'm proud to say, "thank you for recycling"
to the customers I greet when I'm out on the truck

sometimes I need to send out good vibes
to let everyone know I'm blessed to be alive
work is not only about me
find the beauty in every tree
work can set me free

I rely on that happy humble feeling inside
the one that lets me feel alive, that happy humble feeling
work is not only about me
find the beauty in every tree
work can set me free

these days are short but hours are long
I know in my heart this is where I belong
work is not only about me
find the beauty in every tree
work can set me free

I made up my mind to be happy
my life upon the merry-go-round
work is not only about me
find the beauty in every tree
work can set me free

Mankind Has Fallen Out of Grace

My Life Is A Beautiful Sadness

By: George Waldrop

my flesh is so weak, my bones are fragile today
the beautiful things my life holds like a wet blanket
the sadness in my soul is a shiny and hot magnet
for all this rainy cold, am I growing old, pain I hold
a weakest mirror like a flash in the pan, the true measure of a man
today I know no convenience, I know no comfort
my head knows this place, keeps no pace with beauty
and I'm scared
my head plays catch with guilt and the art of let downs
and I'm scared
all I have is today's misery
all I have is tears and regrets
my fears are that all I will have is miserable days
confessed fears make for understood ways
to feed the emptiness in my soul, living for today
in this work life, it's no longer my time
like a poem written in fear, a torn and shaky rhyme
crying out with a distressed emotion
this sea of pain, the seachange of my ocean
fluttering fright, heartbeat of trepidation
who do I call out for?
my absent god?
mercy is a blessing
my absent god?
I'm only guessing
mercy from myself
I grant myself
I pardon myself
this fear is mine
I live with it
I own it
I understand it
