A Brighter Day
a brighter day
is a-coming
to know the meaning
to understand
freedom
to stand like a man
to accept another
beliefs
creeds
color
it's easy to think
every man is a racist
we are capable
of those thoughts
we have a choice
we have a chance
to change
to show dignity
to show respect
closure
departure
the things
I once knew
I go around
with this world
with the people
in it

Unsullen Sounds (of Thinking)
my silence is my being
I am philosophy
parts of knowledge
personal truths
rational thinking
what do I know?
man can't live on good faith
I know it
man can't live on bread alone
I know that too
the certainty & awareness of man
in the name of a virtue
is not a godliness of man
unsullen sounds
from inside my consciousness
I know my own existence
I hear the voice of my heart
I dig the oneness of my soul
thoughts & emotions
carry me away, to & fro
into & out of
this waking life

Nothing Can Bring You Down Like Your Hometown
Tribute to Doowad Jones
When I make a mix and I only get two comments I don't take it personal because, in my mind it's not a reflection of the content of the mix. For years now most of you are talking about something you don't know when you comment on my mixes. That's why mixcloud is a revolution. Because, it gives you are real chance to talk about the music it's self. I think I would like to be right and march into hell, rather than follow a bunch of fools into heaven.
I still live in my hometown. doowad once said to me "Nothing Can Bring You Down Like Your Hometown", I think it's from a Steve Earle song. But, there has never been a truer statement in my mind. So doowad remember a posted mix is a lesson in humility. The music speaks for it's self.

What Is Poetry?
to me a easy feeling
to say what I need to express
thoughtful emotions revealed
for you to see
the reality of me
simplistic of commonplace
things I would say to your face
I find a freedom in poetic expression
a magic by meaning
artistic pleasure in feelings
words from my imagination
intelligence of a human being
sharing the understanding
the things I write, I say
asking the question first
to myself
thinking how to come across
thinking how to convey
thinking about what I need to say
exciting pleasure by beauty
said in an ordinary way

Good People
Good People
I'm not a raised right man
I can't change the past
my parents neglected the family
I can't change the past
my parents didn't teach me
I can't change the past
I suffered, I was in need without maturity to know
I can't change the past
I never knew to respect
I never was respected
in a poorly developed stateless mind
a moral bankrupt
weary of who to trust
I had great friends
who taught me how to be my own best friend
since my family never showed me love
I was without strength
I was incapable of love
I didn't know nothing about love
those memories of my first few friends
haunt me now about how it ends
how I could have been a better person
I could have lived by the golden rule
how I could have given them the best
of myself, I could have loved them
well from what I have taught myself about love
trouble is, I know what it's like to be loved from them
I know that the goodness in the human spirit
is something to live by
to give into & be apart of
to learn from
good people stay with you
all of your life
in your conscience
in your loving memories
in your soul

To look into your eyes the windows of your soul watch & observe your expressions. You don't get that from computer relations. Bob Dylan- Train A-Travelin' (Recorded 1963)
There’s an iron train a-travelin’ that’s been a-rollin’ through the years
With a firebox of hatred and a furnace full of fears
If you ever heard its sound or seen its blood-red broken frame
Then you heard my voice a-singin’ and you know my name
Did you ever stop to wonder ’bout the hatred that it holds?
Did you ever see its passengers, its crazy mixed-up souls?
Did you ever start a-thinkin’ that you gotta stop that train?
Then you heard my voice a-singin’ and you know my name
Do you ever get tired of the preachin’ sounds of fear
When they’re hammered at your head and pounded in your ear?
Have you ever asked about it and not been answered plain?
Then you heard my voice a-singin’ and you know my name
I’m a-wonderin’ if the leaders of the nations understand
This murder-minded world that they’re leavin’ in my hands
Have you ever laid awake at night and wondered ’bout the same?
Then you’ve heard my voice a-singin’ and you know my name
Have you ever had it on your lips or said it in your head
That the person standin’ next to you just might be misled?
Does the raving of the maniacs make your insides go insane?
Then you’ve heard my voice a-singin’ and you know my name
Do the kill-crazy bandits and the haters get you down?
Does the preachin’ and the politics spin your head around?
Does the burning of the buses give your heart a pain?
Then you’ve heard my voice a-singin’ and you know my name

a place to be
to know where I come from
to know where I'll be
I have a dream
there is only one me
in my life
the steps I take
welcoming the change
in my life
it's about the journey
stages of develoment
what I know about how I grow
I have felt the intimacy
from the lives I've touched
the music I've shared
the souls that have been stirred
taking the space between other human beings
I have felt the isolation
thoughts & memories divested of emotions
lonesome day-time hours
incomplete feelings of unexpressed emotion
emptiness, chronical loneliness & apart from it
the IT is apart of what everything is
preserving the good vibes
emanating the optimism from a human source
you never know how you look through other people's eyes
feelings guiding your actions
feelings of modivation to act
the meaning in front of you
and the pain, oh the pain
behind every beautiful thing
so on this day of my birth
enlightening myself for what it's worth
sharing my writing apart from me
I am making this for me
I am alive
a life to live
life is a pleasure I have found
I live for others
people make me who I am
I am good
I know, the best is yet to come
I know where I've been
back to I know where I'll be
a place to be
my place in the world
a kiss and a song are fleeting things

A Conversation with Gus Cannon
Mixing for Dom Flemons
I would like to talk to Gus Cannon over a cup of tea & cigarettes. Oh, if life could be like that. Luckily I got the music and a conscientious mind to make a mix for a stranger. I wonder what it would be like to sit and have a cup of tea with Dom Flemons. The internet allows me to share this mix with people I appreciate. Making music is a wonderment. Every time I listen to the Carolina Chocolate Drops I become part of the music because, I study old-time music, collect 78's & read books about the people & things that stir my soul. Enjoy, Dom!

(Finding Your Place) Beyond The Strange Empty Space
Mixing for Betsy Brown
Life, to me has always been about the journey, getting from here to there not about where I will end up. Thinking about my friends and finding the right songs to fill up that strange & empty space. Taking a song to heart helps open the spaces between yourself and others. These types of mixes are heart-felt because songs can say so much. People make me feel less lonely when I take the time to listen and make them apart of my journey, my life. Enjoy!
