Long About The Break of Day- Painting a Scene with Songs

This blues tale takes place between the small hours of 3am & 6am. When I used to work in the bar and getting off every night 2 am I used to be getting good and drunk in the wee midnight hours. These were not always the happiest of times. But, because I was young and it was my own life away from my parents it was a time for independence & freedom. So this mix is a visit to a distant past and these songs tell that story. Enjoy!

Believe me it's something to get excited about. Some of the best eating around or I can make myself. Nothing in this world like a mess o' collard greens.

Soul Searcher- I Want To Be More Like Jesus

With an open mind I am going to church this sunday. I think I can put aside my beliefs for a christmas mass and do something kind with my poor mother. This mix was made for after the church service. Thanking Nancy for bringing In Tall Buildings to mind again. The undying spirit of Jimi Hendrix is with me. Enjoy!

Angel

By: Jimi Hendrix

Angel come down from heaven yesterday,
She stayed with me just long enough to rescue me
And she tell me a story yesterday,
About the Love between the Moon & the deep blue sea.
And when it was time for her to go,
She spread her wings high over me,
And she said, "I shall return tomorrow."

And I said, "Fly on my sweet Angel,
Fly on through the sky,
Fly on my sweet Angel,
Tomorrow I'll look for you by my side."

And sure enough this morning comes to me,
While silver wings silhouette against the glow of the child's sunrise.
And as the blue birds and the sparrows envy me,
She says, "I Love you little boy and today you shall fly."
She kissed me once,
And the feeling so good she made me cry.
And now we can fly together...

And I said, "Fly on my sweet Angel,
Fly on through the sky,
Fly on my sweet angel,
Together we shall always be high."

Understanding Identity

it's nothing to give out freely
preserve oneself for understanding
with this understanding look for an openness
follow your independent existence
without fear of standing alone
alone may not be loneliness
others will appreciate the oneness
the individuality & existence as a distinct
makes for good quality of character
all it takes is knowing who you are
search & gather oneself
self awareness
consciousness
knowledge
as in waking life
awareness of something for what it is
identify & recognize
the things that belong to you
the things you belong to
find time for oneself
through one's own efforts
you will be rewarded with dignity
self-respect
worthiness
elevation of character
without a weakness
self love will make you strong
when I go to watch the people
my heart longs for respect
suffering & in need for respect
the reflection of how I am respected
is how I see myself
without respect there is no love
I still enjoy myself
I have to find love in my heart
for oneself
acquainted with oneself
belonging to oneself
having an identity over time
takes acceptance of oneself
approval of oneself
and forgiveness of oneself
but, today, I am being born
oneself can be like nothing else

Temporary Hobo Bard- Dedicated To Jessie Lynn,Best of Hobo Tales

I wrote Temporary Hobo Bard to express my love for the hobos, squatter crusty punks & bums I used to drink with when I lived in the city. My love for folk music was shared with these young folks coming in from the train yards from all over. Writing was not that important back then. Temporary Hobo Bard was my first poem written in my modern existence. It has a special place in my little heart. Now days I wish I could write something as fresh. My writing is changing but,so is everything.

As for this mix I dedicated it to my trusty mix-making partner Rust Belt Jessie. She is a mom now. I don't want to bother her with my wants to continue our Hobo Tales. I took all the Hobo Tales and picked all my favorites so this was made without her. She has made me a happy mix maker. Even before I met her I've been making Hobo Tales for years. Jessie never let me down with any of her picks. I am a lonely man. The kindness she has showed me is very valuable. I will always look back on these times and Hobo Tales with fond memories. Enjoy!

Temporary Hobo Bard

She hung her pretty head and cried
Just because I can hopped a old freight train
Popped the can, churched keyed the back and
opened it up wide.
Brand new Carhartt overalls, patches in my memories
Work clothes but, work I can't abide
It's the first of may on this hazy winter's day
Go far far way...disappeared...

Especially,to all of y'all
Determining mentally upon some action...
Out shakin' hands looking for a place to lay
Drinkin' and stinkin'
All good times I crave
Hand me down my banjo one more time
Way down on old chestnut street
...Jägermeister...
Stagger and stepped, lost my way
Who Threw The Whiskey In The Well
by: Lucky Millinder And His Orchestra
played in the background
She drank and her nose was red as a rose...
Like one of the ghost in Ironweed
Street walkers trot &mingle like company suppose to do
...shuckin' & jivin'...
Playin' for nickels & dimes,it's a hard road.
Playin' by ear beneath the piano
It's better to have a bottle in front of me...
Another hand out,it's effective for a time only

Sharing My Mix-Tapes

I don't have a strong affection for you
I save my strong affections
I just appreciate kindness
whatever or wherever I find it
there is something to say
about kindness to strangers
I have to adjust my feelings
the heart may be misleading
I don't miss the old mixed up me
I would like to be your good friend
friendship & good music
but,not everyone is a listener
when I find I open my mind
this little light of mine shines
brightly abounding
it could be just one song
stunningly surprising & astounding
my only hope is you accept me
and my skills for entertainment
sometimes I listen to my mixes
all my thoughts are of you
it's not about what I do
a song is a choice
a diversion to occupy the mind
all it takes is a little time
in this time for listening
all it takes is a open mind
a feeling to sort out
about what you hear & find
a feeling to expression
search your mind
search your heart
if you find an emptiness
destitute of people or human activity
a song can take the place
I have songs that occupy my heart
songs that make me cry
some songs I don't even know why
some songs help me get by
I have to keep it in my mind
and not forget
other people's expression or art
is a powerful thing
when I listen I am apart of it
belonging to a song
again a song is a choice
to tune in or to give unto
a reflection of what you see in you
a thought occurring to yourself
a song can be like nothing else
a song can help you relive a time & place
recalling distant memories
of how you hear your voice or see your face
using your mind & taking time to think
in these oceans of hours a song can fill up the space
rhythm, melody, harmony, and color
but,I am not a song maker
a dream weaver or a heart breaker
I am a follower & listener
my heart is open to music
I fall in love many times daily
I only want you to feel,be & see like me
some say caring is sharing
I don't give out responsibilities
I give open & freely
I want you to be happy like me

Genesis 1:29

You Can't Blame The Youths- Peter Tosh/The Wailers

You can't blame the youth
You can't fool the youth
You can't blame the youth of today
You can't fool the youth

You're teachin' youths to learn in school
That cow jump over moon
You teachin' youths to learn in school
That the dish run away with spoon

So, you can't blame the youth when they don't learn
You can't fool the youth
You can't blame the youth of today
You can't fool the youth

You teach the youth about Christopher Colombus
And you said he was a very great man
You teach the youth about Marco Polo
And you said he was a very great man
You teach the youth about the Pirate Hawkins
And you said he was a very great man
You teach the youth about the Pirate Morgan
And you said he was a very great man

So, you can't blame the youth of today
You can't fool the youth
You can't blame the youth
You can't fool the youth

All these great men were doin'
Robbin', a rapin', kidnappin' and killin'
So called great men were doin'
Robbin', rapin', kidnappin'

So, you can't blame the youth
You can't fool the youth
You can't blame the youth, not at all
You can't fool the youth

When every Christmas come
You buy the youth a pretty toy gun
When every Christmas come
You buy the youth a fancy toy gun

So, you can't blame the youth
You can't fool the youth
You can't blame the youth
You can't fool the youth

'Cause what was hidden from the wise and the prudent
Is now revealed to the babes and the sucklings
What was hidden from the wise and the prudent
Now revealed to the babes and the sucklings

Lord, call upon the youth
For he know the youth is strong
Jah, Jah, call upon the youth
'Cause he know the youth is strong

So, you can't blame the youth
You can't fool the youth
You can't blame the youth, baby children
You can't fool the youth

Don't blame them
Not their fault

The Days of Auld Lang Syne

I know where I begin
I know where I end
brought to light
auld acquaintance
old friends
these holidays left me
broke,lonesome & blue
I'm okay as long as I can see you
the wind of my soul told me
to keep it in your mind and not forget
christmas is over
it's new year's,we are apart of it
so cheers and toast to
the days of auld lang syne
bring in anew
the days of auld lang syne
bring in anew
the days of auld lang syne

when I was weeping
thinking of our new year's kiss
that traditional feeling of bliss
it wasn't a white christmas
stuck between a memory & dream
everyone have memories of christmas
let down,it's a white thing
a white christmas for white people
chasings the old-time christmas theme
a poorly thought-out fantasy
of the song's collective scheme
to appeal to nostalgia
the upper middle-class Bing
so cheers and toast to
the days of auld lang syne
bring in anew
the days of auld lang syne
bring in anew
the days of auld lang syne

watching the folks
as I sip hot coffee
milling around the coffee shop
songs of joy and peace
plays in the undertone
small talk makes me feel less alone
most are looking at their cell phone
I watch & listen to what's going on
I am alone on my own
then back for some more home
the sidewalks,cars & signs
walking to leave behind
thinking about freedom
thoughtful of my own time
my life is a passing season
the band playing my head
should auld acquaintance
be forgot & never brought to mind
this is how I fill up my time
so cheers and toast to
the days of auld lang syne
bring in anew
the days of auld lang syne
bring in anew
the days of auld lang syne

All Is Loneliness

the difference between
loneliness & being alone
I know how to be alone
I have my own conversations
thoughtful contemplations
the clear quietness
of a fertile mind
productive thinking
on my own time
we come into this world alone
lone solitude
we leave this world alone
how we choose to live
it's hard to go in it on my own
self-contained
complete in itself
independent
but,not seperated
it's in these common things
it's in these human things
I see how it pertains to me
as I watch the people everywhere I go
I am not alone
I am not depressed from being lonely
I have only an identity
free to think
not lost into fantasy
I will not lose my hold
on my world
or worry about things I can't control
I am free to think
I am free of the need to be free
confusion used to be my enemy
again this quality of a sound mind
that I maintain to not be as needy
I am not destitute
it's the people I have in my life
it's in the kindness I show them
how I do the things that are right
determines how I live my life

Understanding Redemption

free of the need to be free
remedy for a guilty conscience
redemption is healthy medicine
to deliver and heal
deliverance of burdens
deliverance from hardness of how you feel
freedom can be a burden as well
with freedom comes responsibility
time has taught me tolerance
enduring the freedom from bigotry
different therefor equal
the love I show myself
the love I show others
is one in the same
understanding equality
uniform character
characteristic of identity
attractiveness
to hear clear
to listen and be apart of the life
as the world turns
and goes on all around you
opening it's self
rectify
betterment
no one owns you
or the space you are taking
it's mind control
open and flow
conscience & soul
peace of mind
freedom of control
mental power is:
exciting pleasure
by beauty
with the imagination
freedom & time to think
between thought & expression
setting forth in words
it's a condition
the oneness of self
one's own self
freewill
done freely
it's in the kindness towards others
it's in the kindness we show ourselves
it's in the kindness we show to strangers
kind is something to be
these friendly feelings
when I tell myself
"It's going to be alright"
comforts in written words
all of the wrong deeds
deliverance of guilt
is apart of my needs
of necessity to be free

Free is something to be + trio

I have a distant memory of
a time and place I called free
drinking and smoking
to escape what I call me
in this memory
I use to know how to be free
I knew just what I needed
but,through change & recovery
I lost the old tendency to know what is free
an inclination of that emptiness
unsure of what I'm suppose to be
in this memory
I knew how to say and tell myself
"I shall be free"
in the experience of living every day
change needs somewhere to go
change needs something to be
change needs something to convert to
adjustment to a new reality
free has to mean something different
free has to transform
free of the need to be free
when freedom is defined
the power to determine action
without restraint or to be confined
within this memory
I now know
what free really means
I wasn't free at all
depending on
drugs & alcohol
escape artist
how I spent my time
nothing to call mine
friends & drug buddies
blind leading the blind
in these modern times
freedom is hope
hope is a higher power
like the great creator
or something profound in nature
now I have hope for me
narrow pathway to recovery
recovery and a chance to change
change: the very nature of the universe
without change there would be no evidence of life
life:power of adaptation
a state of adjustment
of my view of reality
amenable to understanding
I have to accept myself
recognise the changes
believe that freedom is my hope
hope is reality
my hope is real to me
within my newfound meaning of free
free is something to be

How To Fight The Loniness- Wilco

How to fight loneliness
Smile all the time
Shine you teeth til meaningless
Sharpen them with lies

And whatevers going down
Will follow you around
Thats how you fight loneliness
You laugh at every joke
Drag your blanket blindly
Fill your heart with smoke
And the first thing that you want
Will be the last thing you ever need
Thats how you fight it

Just smile all the time
Just smile all the time
Just smile all the time
Just smile all the time

It's Alright, Ma (I'm Only Bleeding) Bob Dylan

Darkness at the break of noon
Shadows even the silver spoon
The handmade blade, the child’s balloon
Eclipses both the sun and moon
To understand you know too soon
There is no sense in trying

Pointed threats, they bluff with scorn
Suicide remarks are torn
From the fool’s gold mouthpiece the hollow horn
Plays wasted words, proves to warn
That he not busy being born is busy dying

Temptation’s page flies out the door
You follow, find yourself at war
Watch waterfalls of pity roar
You feel to moan but unlike before
You discover that you’d just be one more
Person crying

So don’t fear if you hear
A foreign sound to your ear
It’s alright, Ma, I’m only sighing

As some warn victory, some downfall
Private reasons great or small
Can be seen in the eyes of those that call
To make all that should be killed to crawl
While others say don’t hate nothing at all
Except hatred

Disillusioned words like bullets bark
As human gods aim for their mark
Make everything from toy guns that spark
To flesh-colored Christs that glow in the dark
It’s easy to see without looking too far
That not much is really sacred

While preachers preach of evil fates
Teachers teach that knowledge waits
Can lead to hundred-dollar plates
Goodness hides behind its gates
But even the president of the United States
Sometimes must have to stand naked

An’ though the rules of the road have been lodged
It’s only people’s games that you got to dodge
And it’s alright, Ma, I can make it

Advertising signs they con
You into thinking you’re the one
That can do what’s never been done
That can win what’s never been won
Meantime life outside goes on
All around you

You lose yourself, you reappear
You suddenly find you got nothing to fear
Alone you stand with nobody near
When a trembling distant voice, unclear
Startles your sleeping ears to hear
That somebody thinks they really found you

A question in your nerves is lit
Yet you know there is no answer fit
To satisfy, insure you not to quit
To keep it in your mind and not forget
That it is not he or she or them or it
That you belong to

Although the masters make the rules
For the wise men and the fools
I got nothing, Ma, to live up to

For them that must obey authority
That they do not respect in any degree
Who despise their jobs, their destinies
Speak jealously of them that are free
Cultivate their flowers to be
Nothing more than something they invest in

While some on principles baptized
To strict party platform ties
Social clubs in drag disguise
Outsiders they can freely criticize
Tell nothing except who to idolize
And then say God bless him

While one who sings with his tongue on fire
Gargles in the rat race choir
Bent out of shape from society’s pliers
Cares not to come up any higher
But rather get you down in the hole
That he’s in

But I mean no harm nor put fault
On anyone that lives in a vault
But it’s alright, Ma, if I can’t please him

Old lady judges watch people in pairs
Limited in sex, they dare
To push fake morals, insult and stare
While money doesn’t talk, it swears
Obscenity, who really cares
Propaganda, all is phony

While them that defend what they cannot see
With a killer’s pride, security
It blows the minds most bitterly
For them that think death’s honesty
Won’t fall upon them naturally
Life sometimes must get lonely

My eyes collide head-on with stuffed
Graveyards, false gods, I scuff
At pettiness which plays so rough
Walk upside-down inside handcuffs
Kick my legs to crash it off
Say okay, I have had enough, what else can you show me?

And if my thought-dreams could be seen
They’d probably put my head in a guillotine
But it’s alright, Ma, it’s life, and life only

Free Is Something To Be

I have a distant memory of
a time and place I called free
drinking and smoking
to escape what I call me
in this memory
I use to know how to be free
I knew just what I needed
but,through change & recovery
I lost the old tendency to know what is free
an inclination of that emptiness
unsure of what I'm suppose to be
in this memory
I knew how to say and tell myself
"I shall be free"
in the experience of living every day
change needs somewhere to go
change needs something to be
change needs something to convert to
adjustment to a new reality
free has to mean something different
free has to transform
free of the need to be free
when freedom is defined
the power to determine action
without restraint or to be confined
within this memory
I now know
what free really means
I wasn't free at all
depending on
drugs & alcohol
escape artist
how I spent my time
nothing to call mine
friends & drug buddies
blind leading the blind
in these modern times
freedom is hope
hope is a higher power
like the great creator
or something profound in nature
now I have hope for me
narrow pathway to recovery
recovery and a chance to change
change: the very nature of the universe
without change there would be no evidence of life
life:power of adaptation
a state of adjustment
of my view of reality
amenable to understanding
I have to accept myself
recognise the changes
believe that freedom is my hope
hope is reality
my hope is real to me
within my newfound meaning of free
free is something to be

Horizons & Busy Being Born - Texas Hobart + Steve Hackett

to live
to work
to be
like everyone
to give
to play
to me
like everyone
I am growing
I am learning
I am sharing
like everyone
forlorn of fate
conscious & awake
aware it's my fate I make
like everyone
I am busy being born
I am busy being free
I am busy telling my truth
I can see
like everyone
a sense of normalcy
I can be me
I live free
and do what I must
like everyone
In this big blue world
I control my destiny
using my mental power
skills enforcing will
like everyone
life is sad
life is beautiful
I know the difference
I can share what I've learn
with those with concerns
about sadness
about quietness
that both run deep
I feel it
from my head to my feet
understanding life
what it means to be alive
and how I survived
depression
pain
thinking I am insane
wanting to die
welcoming change
busy dying
conscious
of my own existence
I shed those fears
life is for the living
I want to know
at the end of my row
just how I grow
I can say I lived for today
everyday
like everyone

Christmas Time Is Here

life is a
a collective scheme
thoughtful & thankful
sugar plum fairy dreams
thoughtful & thankful
dreams of what christmas means
to parents & kids alike
thoughtful & thankful
for what jesus & hope
means to mankind & human beings
believers or believe nots
the prince of peace
Jesus Christ
if you are at the crossroads
faith & beliefs
of pain & personal truths
Santa Claus
fooling the youths
fantasy Vs. reality
distorted reality
always question your faith
creator or savior
this christmas
preserve the mystery
save some time to dream
about what christmas means
the songs you sing
music you listen to
good will towards all mankind
rich or poor
god is watching you
a open door
this could be all there is
nothing more
spirit & christmas cheer
it's in the air
christmas time is here
comes but,once a year
today,I took a moment to pray
for peace
in this season
peace is the reason
purpose for peace
peace of mind
a place to be at christmas time
in my mind
equality for all mankind
love thy neighbor
like a brother
glad tiddings
good news
for those christmas blues
it's in the air
christmas time is here
